Within the Ontario Ministry of Education 'EduGAINS' website, a website that houses ministry developed resources to support policies and programs related to improving learning and teaching (K-12) in Ontario Schools, there is a separate site dedicated to resources to support English Language Learners.
I highly recommend you take a look at the EduGAINS ELL site if you're working with LEALs and wish to draw your attention to one resource in particular. The Steps to English Proficiency (STEP - A Guide for Users) is a framework for initial and ongoing assessment of language acquisition and literacy development of English language learners across The Ontario Curriculum.
This document can help to assist teachers to support a growing demographic of LEALs in Ontario Schools. The STEP resource includes oral, reading, and writing continua to guide instruction and classroom-based assessment.
Differentiated Instruction
A good teacher will differentiate their instruction to accommodate all of their students to the greatest extent possible, and this same consideration should be extended when working with LEALs. One way of accommodating students' unique learning needs is allowing a selection of assessment options for them to display evidence of their learning.
One simple way of differentiating instruction could be the use of a 'choice board'. This allows students to select assignments that are most appealing to them. The use of choice boards helps to empower students while ensuring the main elements of a teacher's lesson or series of lesson is also covered.
Visit this Choice Board Wiki to get a number of ideas of ways that you could use choice boards in your teaching to benefit all students - including LEALs!
